Speaker: Dr. Josh Kalman

Dr. Josh Kalman is a clinical psychologist and owner of Saint Joseph’s Psychological Services, LLC. He obtained his Master’s (M.S.) and doctoral degree (Psy.D.) from Divine Mercy University. His research focused on addressing male internet pornography addiction through the virtues of self-control and love. In his clinical work, Dr. Kalman combines his background in psychology with the teachings of the Catholic Church to help address the whole person. Dr. Kalman’s experiences range from working with adolescents in the Washington, DC court system to working in an Intensive Outpatient and Partial hospitalization program. He also has many years working in non-profits and private practice where his focus is on longer term therapy to address underlying causes of depression, anxiety, trauma, marital problems, and pornography addiction.

Liturgical Catechesis: The Parts of the Mass | Issue 9 / 40

The Gloria or “Glory to God", a hymn of praise to the Trinity, is part of the introductory rites on Sundays and special feasts except during Advent and Lent.

Though it has never been a part of the eucharistic liturgy in Eastern churches, it came to Rome from the Byzantine liturgy of the hours.

The Gloria made its first appearance in the Western church in the sixth century and only during Masses at which a bishop presided. This episcopal connection died out by the end of the eleventh century.

Because it is a hymn, the Gloria should be sung, but some congregations choose to recite it on ordinary Sundays and sing it during more festive times.

El Gloria o "Gloria a Dios", un himno de alabanza a la Trinidad, forma parte de los ritos introductorios de los domingos y fiestas especiales, excepto en Adviento y Cuaresma.

Aunque nunca ha formado parte de la liturgia eucarística en las iglesias orientales, llegó a Roma procedente de la liturgia bizantina de las horas.

El Gloria apareció por primera vez en la Iglesia occidental en el siglo VI y sólo durante las misas presididas por un obispo. Este vínculo episcopal se extinguió a finales del siglo XI.

Como es un himno, el Gloria debe cantarse, pero algunas congregaciones optan por recitarlo los domingos ordinarios y cantarlo en momentos más festivos.
