From the Desk of Father Davis

It's not just a greeting or salutation, a good wish, or a gesture of emotional closeness, hugs and kisses, or personal solidarity. Nor is it meant to be a question like: "hey, how are you?" or "how are the kids?" Nor is it supposed to reflect a comment like "good to see you;" or "have a great day!"

No. The Sign of Peace at Holy Mass is so much more profound. In fact, it is meant to be an extension of the Risen Christ's Easter gift of peace to all humanity, especially believers. As baptized members of Christ's mystical body, the Church, it is our privilege to offer a deep, interior, life-sustaining, abiding extension of hope and prayers for the holistic, spiritual well being, fulfillment, completion, and joy "in abundance" of a fellow disciple of our Blessed Lord. Why would we ever cheapen such a profound gift, which our Lord suffered and died to give us, bringing it to the level of being banal?

Priest Changes at Saint Gregory

Each year, during the Spring season, the Archdiocese of Miami assesses the priest personnel needs of all of its parishes and entities. This year has been no different. With at least six parishes that have been awaiting the assignment of a Parochial Vicar since last year, and now a few retiring pastors, and only three priestly ordinations this weekend, a shuffle has been triggered to meet the various needs of the Church throughout South Florida. Some thirty assignment changes will be announced by the Archbishop this coming week. Parishes with three or more priests will be called upon to embrace possible personnel reductions for the greater good of the Church. Saint Gregory will be among those affected by this moment of change.

Father Eliseus Ezeuchenne, Ph.D., our beloved, tenderly kind, and devoted Parochial Vicar from Nigeria who has admirably served at Saint Gregory for nearly eleven years, will be moving to nearby All Saints Church in Sunrise to be the new Parochial Vicar there.

Father Khiet Pham, Ed. D., our happy, community-oriented, and creative Parochial Vicar from Vietnam, who has admirably served at Saint Gregory for the past two and half years, will be taking on the role of Theology Instructor and Chaplain at Saint Thomas Aquinas High School, while living in residence at nearby Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church in Fort Lauderdale

Both priests have been extraordinary “gifts” to the Saint Gregory the Great Catholic community. Their love of the Lord has been obvious. Their joy in His service has been evident to an exemplary degree. Indeed, they will be missed dearly! What’s more, the two of them will be replaced by only ONE in-coming priest.

Our new Parochial Vicar is the recently ordained Father Agustin Estrada. He was born in Southern California. His family heritage hails from Mexico. He attended Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Hialeah and Saint Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach. He was ordained last Saturday morning at Saint Mary’s Cathedral. His zeal for the Church will make Father Agustin (pronounced: ahh goo steen) a tremendous gift to our community.

All priestly assignments are effective on June 6, 2022. As a result of all of these developments, our four assigned priests will be reduced to three. Some ministerial adjustments may have to take down the road. Meanwhile, we must prepare for an appropriate farewell for our Parochial Vicars who are being re-assigned.

There will be a farewell Mass for Father Eliseus on Saturday, June 4th, at 4:00pm, followed by a reception in the Parish Center Hall.

There will be a farewell Mass for Father Pham on Sunday, June 5th, at 12:00pm, followed by a reception in the Parish Center Hall.

All are invited to offer thanks to these holy men of the Gospel.

Father Davis will lead his 10th trip to the land made holy by the footsteps of Jesus, beginning November 4th thru November 13, 2022.

There's nothing like a total immersion into the spiritual, cultural and historical roots of the Catholic faith as what can be experienced by a personal pilgrimage trip to the Holy Land in Israel. With visits to the Sea of Galilee, Nazareth, Capernaum, Cana, Caesaria, Emmaus, Jerusalem, Bethany, Bethlehem, Jericho, and the Dead Sea, it will be the best religion class one could ever take, done in the context of a community trip of fellow Catholic pilgrims.

Organized by the famed Catholic Travel Centre and Worldwide Tours from Burbank, California, it is certain to be done with excellence, attention to detail and comfort, not to mention profound enrichment to our lives of faith. The trip of a lifetime awaits!
