The Cuban people find their salvation en the arms of Our Lady of Charity. Jesus Christ is the only Savior given to us by the Eternal Father, and He was given through the Woman blessed among women. "In these words, Teok Carrasco explains his creation, the beautiful mural of the Shrine of Our Lady of Charity, blest and installed September 8, 1977.
Water is a biblical symbol of suffering. We all know how the statue of Our Lady of Charity was found floating on the waters of Nipe Bay, and in the mural water is depicted at the beginning and at the end as a symbol of the presence of the cross in our history.
In the top part of the mural we can see Turquino Peak, as an invitation to rise to the summits and from there to heaven, our final destiny as pilgrims on this earth. And crowning it all, we find two angels carrying the homeland to God in their arms, represented by a cross covered by a flag, because our homeland is suffering. Emerging from the sea, we find the hands of the artist himself praying for that suffering.
Surrounding the Virgin we see temples dedicated to Her, one in each province of Cuba and the Shrine in Miami.
On the left side of the mural, the artist depicts images from the Cuban countryside: a sugar mill, a tobacco field, and the hills of Pinar del Río. We can also see the young girl Apolonia talking to Our Lady, next to Florida's martyrs, and the public square and the Cathedral of St. Augustine of Florida.
On the right side, there are urban images: Bayamo burning and, in the higher part, the towers of both Cuban cathedrals, Santiago and Havana. Next to them is the Monument of the Unknown Soldier from Matanzas Park. Underneath, next to the El Cobre's Sanctuary, we see Morro Castle and under it the Cuban shield and the statue of liberty.
Now we should remember who the 44 historic figures appearing on the mural are. We will add some facts about each and their religious testimonies, which ara perhaps the least known facts about their lives. ---
