John testified further, saying, “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from the sky and remain upon him.” John 1:32

God’s call is an invitation to service, honor, and holiness.

Today’s readings center on God’s call. All of those called Isaiah, Saint Paul, Sosthenes, and John the Baptist have a special vocation from God to bear witness to his name and foster holiness among his people. God equips those so chosen with grace, honor, and strength to carry out their mission. He calls and equips us, too.

ABCD Campaign 2023

To understand one another, and to grow in charity and truth, we need to pause, to accept and listen to one another. In this way we already begin to experience unity. Unity grows along the way, it never stands still. Unity happens when we walk together. - Pope Francis

In the Gospel after Jesus was baptized, John testified saying, “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove… and remain upon him.”

As you make your gift to the 2023 Archbishop's Charities and Development Drive (ABCD), know that you are a sign of God’s Spirit of love to those who are suffering.

St. Paul Street Evangelization (SPSE) is a grassroots, world-wide non-profit organization, dedicated to responding to the mandate of Jesus to preach the Gospel to all nations by taking the Catholic Faith to the streets. Christ’s call to evangelize was made to every Catholic Christian.

By engaging in a simple, non-confrontational method of evangelization, volunteers go where the people are: parks, events, etc, and wait for the public to approach us rather than shouting with a bullhorn at passersby.

Our teams always begin in prayer, maintaining a peaceful presence and allowing people to approach if they choose. Initial contact is limited to a friendly greeting and an offer of a free Rosary, miraculous medal, or pamphlet, but the evangelist never tries to force anyone to stop and talk. This involves being available to the public to answer questions about the faith, and offering to pray with those who request it.

We are looking for volunteers to build a team in marathon. Our goal is to have a presence at the seafood festival and monthly outings. Please contact Jacob in the choir for more information or contact the church office.

Saint Fabian’s Story

Fabian was a Roman layman who came into the city from his farm one day as clergy and people were preparing to elect a new pope. Eusebius, a Church historian, says a dove flew in and settled on the head of Fabian. This sign united the votes of clergy and laity, and he was chosen unanimously.

He led the Church for 14 years and died a martyr’s death during the persecution of Decius in 250 A.D. Saint Cyprian wrote to his successor that Fabian was an “incomparable” man whose glory in death matched the holiness and purity of his life.

In the catacombs of Saint Callistus, the stone that covered Fabian’s grave may still be seen, broken into four pieces, bearing the Greek words, “Fabian, bishop, martyr.”

St. Sebastian’s Story

Almost nothing is historically certain about Sebastian except that he was a Roman martyr, was venerated in Milan even in the time of Saint Ambrose and was buried on the Appian Way, probably near the present Basilica of St. Sebastian. Devotion to him spread rapidly, and he is mentioned in several martyrologies as early as 350.

he legend of Saint Sebastian is important in art, and there is a vast iconography. Scholars now agree that a pious fable has Sebastian entering the Roman army because only there could he assist the martyrs without arousing suspicion. Finally he was found out, brought before Emperor Diocletian and delivered to Mauritanian archers to be shot to death. His body was pierced with arrows, and he was left for dead. But he was found still alive by those who came to bury him. He recovered, but refused to flee.

One day he took up a position near where the emperor was to pass. He accosted the emperor, denouncing him for his cruelty to Christians. This time the sentence of death was carried out. Sebastian was beaten to death with clubs. He was buried on the Appian Way, close to the catacombs that bear his name.

Saint Agnes’ Story

Almost nothing is known of this saint except that she was very young 12 or 13 when she was martyred in the last half of the third century.

Legend has it that Agnes was a beautiful girl whom many young men wanted to marry. Among those she refused, one reported her to the authorities for being a Christian. She was arrested and confined to a house of prostitution. The legend continues that a man who looked upon her lustfully lost his sight and had it restored by her prayer. Agnes was condemned, executed, and buried near Rome in a catacomb that eventually was named after her. The daughter of Constantine built a basilica in her honor.

When someone you care about hurts you, you can hold on to anger, resentment and thoughts of revenge or embrace forgiveness and move forward.

Reflecting on hurt and how to forgive

Who hasn't been hurt by the actions or words of another?

Perhaps a parent constantly criticized you growing up, a colleague sabotaged a project or your partner had an affair. Or maybe you've had a traumatic experience, such as being physically or emotionally abused by someone close to you.
